Today is, of course, Election Day. While none of us knows exactly what will happen today, let’s not forget that God does know and that He is not afraid of the outcome. I remember well a presidential election many years ago. Ray and I had strong opinions about who we wanted to win the election. The outcome did not turn out the way we had hoped.

Evidently we had talked about it a little too much in front of our children. I remember standing in our kitchen in Urbana, Illinois, when our youngest child communicated her fears. Inwardly she was wringing her little hands. She was genuinely worried about what was going to happen now that this person was going to be our next president. I quickly reassured her that Mommy and Daddy weren’t happy with how the election turned out but that she did not need to worry. Things were going to be okay.
The barn and the big round bales of hay sparkled in the heavy frost we had yesterday. As I looked out the window, I thought with some fear about what might happen on Election Day. Then I remembered the wonder back in the 1980s when the Berlin Wall came down. That was a political outcome that I could not even imagine when I was a child. I know that that wall came down because God was working in the world.
God has not abandoned His people. He never will. We can reassure ourselves of that today, and we can reassure our children. Jesus made a promise before He went back to Heaven.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father
and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always,
even to the end of the age.

We can count on God to be our helper. Our kids can, too.
. . . for He Himself has said,
“I will never desert you,
nor will I ever forsake you,”
so that we confidently say,
“The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”
