Bright

The world was gray when Ray and I were walking on a recent morning. The pretty fog we see almost every morning was thick. My phone stayed by my side with nothing particular to make me want to snap a picture. Then, in the fog we saw this bright clump of yellow flowers.

There’s a bright spot, I thought. On Tuesday I shared other photos of this same kind of flower. Pardon the repeat, but I wanted you to see this photo of one bright spot of color in the midst of a gray day. It was cheery on that gray morning to see that one bright spot..

As we walked, I kept thinking about one bright spot and about how that is what I want to be—a bright spot in a room or in a group of people. I don’t want to be an attention-getting bright spot, but a bright spot of joy or encouragement.

Then I thought about the Bible’s teaching about our being light. God does want us to be bright. He wants us to shine light into the lives of others.

That’s what we want our children to be—bright spots of light.

My office has a ceiling light with five bulbs. On one table is my Mama Sue’s 1950s George and Martha Washington lamp. On another is Mother’s pretty pink 1960s glass lamp. Behind me is Mama Sue’s floor lamp. I turn them all on in the morning. I love to be surrounded by light.

Whether we like dim light—like our children do—or bright light—like Ray and I do, we all love to be surrounded with the light that others shine into our lives.

As Jesus said:

Let your light shine before men in such a way
that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16
